Become a ninja for a day in the middle of Tokyo’s famous knife street. During this course in Asakusa, participants will learn firsthand about Japan’s famous assassins by stepping not just into their shoes but also getting to wear an entire ninja outfit and train with real ninja weapons under the watchful eye of a shinobi expert and with the help of an interpreter. The experience also includes lessons on the philosophy and magical practices of ninjutsu.
Why We Recommend This
- Participants get to wear a genuine “ninja-gi” outfit as well as samurai hakama pants to put them in the right state of mind for learning about Japan’s ancient fighting and spiritual techniques. Don’t forget to strike a fearsome pose at the end during the commemorative photoshoot!
- Practice with a sword, a ninja blowgun, or "shuriken" throwing stars to better understand how the shinobi wrote their name in Japanese history.
- Learn about the mystical side of the ninja during the tour’s lessons on meditation, ancestor worship, and kuja-kiri, a form of folk-magic based around the idea that complex signs made with one’s hands can focus your energies and help you master any subject.
- The course is led by a “ninshi,” a shinobi samurai expert who will give participants an authentic ninja experience in the heart of Tokyo, just a 5-minute walk from Asakusa Station on the Tsukuba Express Line. An interpreter also participates in the lessons, so a language barrier won’t be an issue.
- The Asakusa dojo is located on Kappabashi Street, famous for selling knives as well as all other kinds of kitchen utensils. It’s a great place to pick up some souvenirs after the ninja experience.
